Dean commenced his career as a Cadet Building Surveyor within local government in 1986, moving into private practice in 1994. He joined Brian Sherwell in 2001, and forged a partnership as Co-Director in 2008, forming the current practice BSA Building Surveyors in January 2012. Dean is a highly motivated Director and blends his management role with first hand project involvement, offering our valued clients with extensive knowledge from a diverse and comprehensive building control and project background. Dean has managed some of Regional Victoria’s landmark projects of which the practice is immensely proud.
Dean holds a Bachelor of Building Surveying, Graduate Certificate in Performance Building and Fire Codes, a Graduate Certificate in Management and is registered as a Building Surveyor – Unlimited with the Victorian Building Authority and a Level 1 Certifier in Queensland with the QBCC. Dean is also an accredited Building Surveyor and Auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services Fire Risk Management Unit, Victoria
Jo van Loon – Manager Technical Services and Senior Building Surveyor
Jo is a Senior Building Surveyor who joined our team in 2012 bringing with her extensive local government experience as a Senior Building Surveyor and team leader. Jo has been in Building Control since 1990 where she commenced as a Cadet Building Surveyor in Victoria and also has over 4 years experience with the City of Hobart in Tasmania. Jo’s diverse experience in complex commercial projects including Health and Aged Care, Detention, Education, Emergency Services, Retail Bulky Goods Stores and Residential makes her a valuable part of the team.
Jo has registration as an Unlimited Building Surveyor and Building Inspector and also holds a Graduate Certificate in Performance Based Building and Fire Codes from VUT. She too is an accredited Building Surveyor and Auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services Fire Risk Management Unit, Victoria .
David Thacker – Team Leader Domestic Projects and Senior Building Surveyor
David entered the building industry as an apprentice carpenter before running his own building and carpentry business. He then moved into local government as a building inspector in 1986, advancing over the years to municipal building surveyor level in 2001. David joined the practice in 2005, and is well respected by our clients for his excellent down to earth approach. David’s trade background and extensive building inspecting and surveying experience provides him with the knowledge base required to solve complex problems on site. David’s extensive residential experience with some very complex dwelling designs on challenging sites provides the practice with a the balance of expertise expected by our diverse clientele.
David holds registration with the Victorian Building Authority as a Building Surveyor – Unlimited and a Building Inspector – Unlimited.
Peter Phillips – Senior Building Surveyor
Peter offers specialist technical skills in commercial, industrial and residential projects and has expertise in health care, office and warehouse developments, shopping centre expansions, fit-outs and disability assessment. Peter’s previous experience in private consultancy, local government and public authorities also give him a great appreciation of the industry from various perspectives. In 2002, he gained further experience with the CFA as a Senior Fire Safety Consultant. During his time with the fire brigade he was active with government organisations, building legislation review and advocacy as well as technical training and support to fire safety staff.
Peter is a registered building surveyor with the Victorian Building Authority as a Building Surveyor – Unlimited, and holds a Graduate Certificate in Performance Based Building and Fire Codes. Peter is also an accredited Building Surveyor and Auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services Fire Risk Management Unit, Victoria
Greg Stepien – Senior Building Surveyor
Greg joined BSA Building Surveyors in March 2016 with 20 years experience in the profession. Greg offers specialist technical skills in significant landmark commercial, industrial and residential projects and has expertise in health care, office and warehouse developments, shopping centre expansions, fit-outs and disability assessment.
Greg is a registered building surveyor with the Victorian Building Authority as a Building Surveyor – Unlimited, and holds a Graduate Certificate in Performance Based Building and Fire Codes. Greg is also an accredited Building Surveyor and Auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services Fire Risk Management Unit, Victoria
Chris Biviano – Building Surveyor – Limited and Building Inspector – Unlimited
Chris joined our practice in 2009 as a Cadet Building Surveyor, quickly working up to the position of Assistant Building Surveyor. He has recently become qualified as a Building Surveyor – Limited as a result of his application and dedication to his work and is currently studying towards completion of his academic qualifications as a Building Surveyor Unlimited. Chris is also an accredited Building Surveyor and Auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services Fire Risk Management Unit, Victoria
Chris has a civil construction background as well as holding a position as a trained fire fighter with the Department of Sustainability and Environment, providing a diverse background complementing our practice particularly in the area of Bushfire Attack Level Assessments.
Tony Tito – Building Inspector – Unlimited
Tony has recently joined our practice after 25 years in local government, 22 of these years as a Building Inspector. Appointment of Tony provides key support to our essential safety measures services as well as complex mandatory inspections. His proactive problem solving is a key attribute.
Brendon Kirwood – Assistant Building Surveyor
Brendon primary role is as an Assistant Building Surveyor having spent a number of years in the commercial construction industry as a Site Manager and has a Diploma of Building Surveying. Brendon is currently pursuing studies towards his Bachelor of Building Surveying and is a Member of both the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors and the Master Builders Association. His experience in the commercial construction industry together with his thirst for knowledge, make a valuable contributor to our team.
Alistair Elliott – Senior Technical Building Assistant
Alistair is the most recent member to join our Technical Team. Alistair holds registration as an architectural draftsperson, domestic builder – unlimited, has experience in energy ratings for domestic projects and has also undertaken a sessional teaching role at the Gordon TAFE in the Advanced Building & Construction and Carpentry Departments. Alistair’s broad based experience compliments his role in our domestic team.
Campbell Wood– Building Surveyors Assistant
Campbell has recently joined our team as a trainee building surveyor and has strong interest in pursuing a career as a building surveyor. Campbell offers a key support role to our domestic team to assist in the processing of permit applications and other associated services.
BSA Building Surveyors also have a network of building surveyors and inspectors to assist with service delivery of mandatory inspections for projects in both Melbourne and Regional Victoria.
