Project Overview
Completed in 2024, the Belerren Sports and Wellbeing Centre is a landmark development at The Geelong College. Designed by Wardle Architects and constructed by Lyons Construction, the centre anchors the western sporting precinct of the senior campus and reflects the school’s commitment to student wellbeing, sport, and learning.
The facility includes:
• A double court gymnasium with elite training facilities
• Weights and multipurpose rooms
• Four flexible learning classrooms
• Basement car park with 40 spaces
• Event and viewing spaces overlooking Mackie Oval
• Custom brickwork using 10,000 hand-cut bricks to match heritage buildings
The name “Belerren” means to shine in the Wadawurrung language, symbolising the centre’s role in nurturing student excellence.
BSA’s Role in Successful Delivery:
Design & Planning Phase
• Provided early regulatory advice to support planning approvals
• Conducted design compliance reviews to align architectural intent with BCA/NCC standards
• Delivered comprehensive review of performance solutions for fire safety, accessibility, and structural innovation
Construction Phase
• Issued building permits for all stages to facilitate the program
• Conducted mandatory inspections to ensure code compliance and quality
• Ensured compliance with performances solutions prepared by fire safety and access consultants
• Ensured accessibility compliance for inclusive design
Post-Construction Support
• Prepared Essential Safety Measures (ESMs) documentation
• Provided occupancy certification and final sign-off
• Offered ongoing advisory services for operational safety and maintenance
